Burning through Poetry and Geometry without incident, Anaar leaves Maggie and Dan behind to head to his first music class. Upon entering the classroom, he is immediately met by two other faces, one being Stefani.

“Anaar!” She runs up, giving him a tight hug. Slightly taken aback by the sudden show of affection he gingerly pats her on the back in response. “I'm so happy to see someone else I know! I should have done like you and Maggie did. You know, take classes with someone, because it is so scary all by myself. Not surprisingly, this is the only class I'm not worried about. Actually, I'm quite comfortable with it. Fine time to have someone with me, right?” Anaar gives her a little smile as he sits down next to her things. “I didn't know you play music.”

“I don't.”

“Then this is your first time?”

He rubs the back of his neck embarrassed. “Yeah…”

“You are going to have to learn to read music too then. It is interesting that you decided to learn what is thought to be one of the hardest instruments to pick up, not to mention of course master.”

Anaar pales a small bit. “It is?”

“Oh yeah! I have been playing instruments since I could even remember. Even then every time I tried picking up a violin I did so badly! I figure this is a challenge that I can actually meet head on though. I think the violin is one of the most beautiful instruments in existence. I have always been jealous of those who could play it.”

“You did say you were a musician before though, right? You've even played concerts, haven't you? What do you play?”

With a dismissive hand wave, “Oh not that much, only the piano, electric and acoustic guitar, organ, flute, harpsichord, harp, oboe, trumpet, french horn, drums, cello and dulcimer.”

Anaar gives her a dry look. “Did you really just say only, then proceed to rattle off strings, winds and percussion instruments like nothing?”

“But there are so many more things out there to learn!”

“Right… You sing too?”

She nods happily. “Yep! The first instrument humans ever used.”

“Cool. I'm totally out of my depth here. I like music, but I can't say I'm in any way made for it.”

“Do you sing?”

Gesturing as if trying to fend someone off, “Nooo, nooo… Not at all. My mom used to sing, she has a beautiful voice. I was always too self-conscious to try it.”

The instructor comes in and immediately begins class with the three students. After some initial talk about expectations and practice, the three take up their violins and begin with the basics. Despite Stefani's earlier comments, she is a natural with the violin and where the others make discordant screeches, looking extremely awkward, she looks elegant, with the practiced ease of a professional.

As Stefani continues her playing, Anaar notices something weird happening to him. Despite his already full effort, he suddenly feels like he has to work even harder. What in the hell is happening to me? I'm trying my hardest, but it feels like something is pushing me to do even better.
